Cassie

I woke in early morning stillness. Emilio was sound asleep on the floor. He insisted on sticking to Jess’ rules and wouldn’t sleep next to me in the bed. But didn’t want to leave me in the room alone either. Once we came back from our meeting, I was dead and he was exhausted from the drive.

Jess had a robe hanging from the back of the door that I slipped on and tied at the waist. I stepped softly down the stairs. Bailey was on my mind. I couldn’t call her. What would I say? Found out your parent’s deaths weren’t an accident.

There had to be some proof. Something I could show her. I couldn’t bring it up until I found some.

The sun streamed through the open blinds in the living room. I loved Wilmington. The little houses. The trees. The Cape Fear River. Maybe Bailey and I would be neighbor’s someday. Our children would be best friends and our houses would be interchangeable.

How did Emilio fit into the picture?

Emilio. Not Ben.

It was time to figure my relationships out. I couldn’t keep leading Emilio on if I decided to work things out with Ben. Or vice versa.

Ben and Faith were a thing. Behind my back. But still a thing. I should have been upset, mad, disappointed. But I didn’t care.

The day was sunny. I heard there was a storm moving in. We’d be home before it hit.

I flipped through my phone. No text messages. It was funny how when you were the most popular girl in school, you could also be the loneliest. Everything I wished for, I got. The past year, I realized how superficial that was. The images, hierarchy, social status wasn’t worth it.

All I really wanted was someone to understand, hold my hand, and walk beside me.

Movement outside drew me to the window. Ryan was tinkering with something under the hood of his Nova. I inched to go to him. To ask how he was doing. Even though, he didn’t deserve it. He had put Bailey through hell last year.

I tightened the robe and slipped on a pair of shoes that sat beside the door.

He stayed working under the hood. Cars were Bailey’s thing. Not mine. I wouldn’t be able to make small talk about something I knew nothing about. “Hey.” I approached from the side.

“Cassie,” his arm muscles tightened as he clutched a tool. His blue eyes met mine. “Saw the car in the drive. Messaged Jess since I didn’t recognize it. She said you were here.”

“Yep. In all my glory.” I studied his features. He seemed off. Sad even. “How are you?”

He sat the tool on the edge of the car. “How is she? Jess won’t tell me.”

“Good. Happy. Doing her own thing. Something she needed to do.” Ryan used to love Bailey. Maybe he still did. Their lives flipped upside down when he stopped trusting her and let a dark secret come between them.

“I hope she is. Believe it or not, I want the best for her.
